Turkish Airlines Economy Class

Turkish Airlines Premium Economy Class Booking Review

Turkish Airlines recently introduced a true premium-economy product. Previously, the airline offered Premium seats in the Turkish Airlines Economy Class with extra legroom to the passengers in the first few rows.

Having recently flown with Turkish Airlines, I was keen to try out the Turkish Airlines Premium Economy product and see how it compared with the other airlines serving the same class. A flight from New York to Istanbul would be a perfect getaway to measure the services offered onboard. It was also my best decision to avoid long-haul red-eye flights during the wee hours.

The flight boarded on time and the jet stream was strong, and it took only 8 hours and 50 minutes to reach Istanbul Ataturk International Airport.

Booking

We booked this flight as a roundtrip ticket from Newyork to Istanbul for 694.23 USD. Turkish Airlines charges 58,000 miles to redeem in order to purchase this as an award ticket. Turkish Airlines was running a special discount offer of 15% on the Turkish Airlines Premium Economy booking. The sale is still on until 31st December.

Ground Experience

Turkish Airlines has its own dedicated terminal at John F Kennedy (JFK) airport, Terminal 1. Though I have seen it as a busy terminal usually in the morning, there was no rush and calmness surmounted as soon as I arrived at 8.30 AM for my 10:50 AM flight. Turkish Airlines operates two direct flights to Istanbul every day from JFK airport. One is a late morning flight which I had boarded and the other operates as a red-eye flight.

Given my Turkish Airlines Premium Economy status, I was able to use the priority check-in and boarding point, which had zero rush.  The Turkish Airlines ground crew was welcoming and helpful. Without asking, one of the crew generously offered me TSA Pre-check security and was done through check-in and security screening in less than 10 minutes. Of course, the Turkish Business Lounge access was included with the Turkish Airlines Premium Economy Booking Class.

Turkish Airlines Business Lounge

The lounge is located on the JFK terminal 1 near gare F6. Just follow the signage towards the F gates, and you will see the entrance to the lounge. The lounge is on the first floor and one can access via escalator. There’s a reception desk on the first floor. Once you check-in, there are gates for you to enter the lounge. You can simply scan the boarding pass to let the gate open itself. Inside the lounge, there are massive seatings all in white leathers. It can seat a maximum of 700 passengers at one go. There’s also a small business center, consists of workstations with some laptops. Along the walls on both sides, there is a dining table that seats four people each. There’s a separate room for the TV viewing area. There’s also a daybed area partitioned by curtains. They were quite narrow but well maintained for a quick nap. The lounge also has some other unique amenities such as a virtual gaming arena and a special area for kids by the name ‘Turkish Lounge Play’.

Turkish Airlines Premium Economy Cabin

My aircraft was a newly procured Airbus A-321 which has recently renovated with a premium economy cabin. It has a total capacity of 24 passengers over four rows in a 2-2-2 configuration. The seats were 22 inches wide with a height of 38 inches. I had chosen a seat in the second row to avoid the rush from the entrance near the first rows. I chose a window seat and the legroom was essentially unlimited. There was a partition or a wall that separates Turkish Airlines Economy Class, Premium Class, and Business Class. Each seat has a dedicated footrest that came out from your seat rather than the front row seat. The seat also has a small remote function and three simple recliner functions. The lavatory is common for Turkish Airlines Economy and Premium Economy passengers.

Amenities

The in-flight system was superb, as the screens were 10 inches in size which was quite decent compared to other airlines’ premium economy.

Turkish Airlines Premium Economy seats got four charging points. There was a blanket and pillow, a bottle of water, an amenity kit, and headphones on each seat. Every seat provides an amenity kit powered by Blackberry.

Food and Beverages

The menu was placed on the seats as the passengers boarded the plane. The food offerings in the Turkish Airlines Premium Economy booking class is as lavish as you find in their business class. The portions of the meals were quite bigger in each serving. Much to my surprise, it was a buffet system so there was unlimited serving.

The salad dressing was more fresh and greener, and while the main course was decent. The chicken served was tender enough. The cheesecake served in the end as dessert was just a mere basic to make it feel like a three-course meal. Overall, it was a nearly perfect meal in the premium economy long haul flight.

Overall Experience

Turkish Airlines was basically late to the premium economy segment but that means they refurbished the standards which inspired other airlines to raise their bar in the skies. Flight entertainment and WiFi systems are one of the key features that are outstanding compared to American Airlines in their premium economy segment. The food was not at par -but it was significantly better than Turkish Airlines Economy Class.
